What a week! We started with the swearing in of the 2019 class of councilmembers and the election of a new mayor pro tem. I’d like to congratulate everyone who ran to serve the people of our great city this election cycle and I am looking forward to working with my fellow councilmembers, our new mayor, and our community to ensure we’re putting our working class first.
Council Meeting Recap
Outside of ceremonies, our agenda consisted of approving a number of contracts (the majority of which were competitively bid) for items ranging from food service for our city jail to uniforms for our police department. We also voted on several resolutions allowing us to exercise our water rights, and elected Councilmember Nicole Johnston (Ward II) as our mayor pro tem for a one-year term.
One item in our consent calendar stood out as it began as a competitively bid item but effectively became a single source contract due to only two bidders responding to our request for proposal, with one of the bidders submitting the incorrect form and being disqualified as a result. My intent is to work with our city managers and staff on this issue and see if there is a way we can protect competitive bidding by providing an opportunity to cure incorrect submissions while maintaining transparency for our bid process.
With the election of Mayor Pro Tem Johnston, we will be discussing policy committee assignments in the coming week. Once those are set I will begin working in earnest to make the policy platform you voted for a reality.
Out and About
I was honored to be invited to attend the grand opening of VONS Chicken in the Iliff Commons shopping center. VONS is based out of Seongam, South Korea, which is one of our sister cities! I met Mr. Ho, who will be operating the establishment, and with Mr. Suh Dae Jin, the founder and president of VONS. We are very excited that Ward IV was chosen for their first location in Colorado. I’ve often said that we have the best food scene in the state right here in Aurora, and VONS is making it that much better.

Ward IV Meeting Updates
Staff is helping us find a suitable venue for our ward meetings and I will send out another update as soon as we find one. Meetings are currently targeted for the 3rd Wednesday of each month, beginning at 6:30 PM and running to 8:00 PM, with a break over November and December to accommodate the holiday season.
I want to thank everyone again for voting this past cycle, whether I earned your support or not. I am honored to serve our community in this capacity and will be dedicating my time to serving the residents of Ward IV for the next four years. I want to hear from you, so please don’t hesitate to reach out at firstname.lastname@example.org, or leave me a text or voicemail at 720.634.6927.
